Q&A with Natalie Cheung
WAAW: What is your process like?
Cheung: I've only picked up illustrating in the past year, being most confident in drawing otters, objects and then people. In that hierarchy. I'd sketch terribly on a piece of paper to get the general idea. I feel ideas flow better when I draw on a piece of rough paper. The pressure's not really there to produce. After I'm comfortable and sure of my concepts, I'd transfer it to the computer.
What do you use to create your works?
[Adobe] Illustrator, most of the time. I would draw on my tablet and it'd be converted to vector. It's an enjoyable process for me.
What inspires you?
Being on the bus and walking around. There are a ton of things that pop up in your mind when you have a question to figure out. I also watch music videos or movies to help generate ideas. My boyfriend, who is also an architectural designer, swears by Coldplay's "Up and Up" MTV as inspiration for a good collage.
Who are your key influences?
There are many, but I look up to [English designer Thomas] Heatherwick's work, especially in his book Making. Stylistically, I appreciate Wes Anderson's visual and narrative styles.
What are you working on now?
I'm currently working on my publication/blog "Stories" and on building up my architectural portfolio.
