Submit to We Are A Website.

We are a literary website run by Singaporeans.

We Are A Website was born after one of us stole a copy of The White Review from a cafe.

After reading it from cover to cover, a malformed-by-naivete thought took shape: "How hard could it be to run a literary journal?"

Over steak, sushi and wine, we hashed out the details. What do we put out? (Whatever we like, whenever we like.) Should we have an art section? (Yes.) Would we look at food pictures if people submitted those? (No, we will most adamantly not.) The one thing we could all agree on: To be open-minded about what a short story, poetry and good writing is. We believe in not foisting false advertising on anyone. Hence the name. (We also take things too far, sometimes.)

Based in Singapore, we hope to give Singaporean writers and artists an exciting but unpretentious platform. But we also want to hear from the rest of the world.

We strive to be encouraging, even in our rejection slips. Most of all, as writers and word addicts, we want to read your work and, hopefully, work with you to improve - or champion! - it.

We ask only that you send us work that is original in content and original in form. Toy with us. Be warned, however, that one of us is prone to grammar rage after perusing internet dating profiles.

We accept:
  • Short stories up to 5,000 words
  • Poetry up to three A4-sized pages (no epics, please)
  • Non-fiction up to 3,000 words
  • Art portfolios no more than 5MB (or query with one or two images by e-mail; send the rest via Dropbox after we give the green light)

To submit, please e-mail short stories, poems and creative non-fiction to .

  • Put the word "Submission", and the title of your work in the subject line. Include a short bio of yourself in the third person in the body of your e-mail.
  • Submissions must be attached in Microsoft Word (.doc) format, double-spaced, in a sensible 12-point font.
  • We are totally fine with simultaneous submissions, but please let us know as soon as possible if a piece has been accepted elsewhere.
  • On a related note: If, for any reason, you would like to withdraw your work from consideration, please inform us as soon as possible. We spend a lot of time debating what goes into the journal, so that will really save us a lot of trouble.
  • Please submit only your own work.
  • Please submit only work that has not appeared anywhere else (including on your blog or public Facebook/Instagram/Twitter accounts).
  • Please wait six months after contributing to WAAW before sending new work.
  • If you are sending a mix of poems, prose and art, we prefer you do so in a single e-mail, rather than in multiple missives. It’s less confusing when we reply to you.

We will work with contributors, where necessary, to edit their work for publication. Works may also be copyedited for errors before publication.

We take first online publishing rights, after which all copyright revert to their authors. Should pieces in We Are A Website subsequently appear in print form, a mention that it was first published here will make us very happy. We are a non-profit initiative, and not a paying market as yet.

Update: Due to the number of submissions we are currently receiving, our response time is now about 6 months.

E-mail us at , if you have questions.

We look forward to reading you.
